India’s government has lifted roughly 500 million people out of poverty over the past decade, a milestone highlighted by Al Jazeera. The effort, driven by targeted welfare schemes, rural employment guarantees, and inclusive growth policies, has markedly reduced the poverty headcount ratio.

However, the same period has seen widening income disparity, with the wealthiest 10 % capturing a growing share of national income. This paradox underscores the need for transparent, accountable policy frameworks that balance poverty alleviation with structural reforms to curb inequality.

To ensure justice, civil society calls for rigorous impact assessments, independent audits of public spending, and participatory planning that empowers marginalized communities. Only through sustained accountability can India translate economic gains into equitable, sustainable prosperity.
