In a disturbing trend, Malawi’s law enforcement has intensified witchcraft investigations targeting senior citizens, many of whom are marginalized and lack legal representation. Human Rights Research Center reports that dozens of elders have been detained, subjected to invasive searches, and denied access to counsel, raising serious concerns about due process and the right to a fair trial.

Witnesses describe a climate of fear, with communities pressured to report suspected “witches” to authorities. The practice violates international human rights standards, including the prohibition of torture and arbitrary detention, and contravenes Malawi’s own constitutional guarantees of dignity and equality.

International bodies urge the Malawian government to halt these investigations, conduct independent inquiries, and provide reparations to victims. Accountability must be pursued to restore justice and protect the rights of the most vulnerable.
