In rural Malawi, an alarming surge of witchcraft accusations targets elderly residents, sparking a wave of violence, forced evictions, and psychological trauma. Local NGOs report that over 300 seniors have been detained or harassed by community members and, in some cases, by police acting on unverified claims.

Human rights advocates argue that these acts violate basic protections against discrimination and arbitrary detention. The government’s failure to investigate or prosecute perpetrators has amplified the sense of impunity, leaving vulnerable elders without recourse or support.

International observers call for a transparent inquiry, the protection of seniors’ rights, and the implementation of community education programs to dismantle harmful superstitions that undermine social cohesion and justice.
