Human Rights Watch has issued a stark warning that Malaysia’s policy of forcibly returning refugees from Myanmar to the border region could put their lives at risk. The report details how the government’s “return and repatriation” program bypasses international refugee protection standards, sending vulnerable individuals back into an area where they face ongoing conflict and lack basic humanitarian aid.

The organization cites evidence that returned refugees are often intercepted by security forces and denied access to medical care or legal assistance. It argues that such actions violate Malaysia’s obligations under the 1951 Refugee Convention and the 1967 Protocol, to which the country is a signatory.

Human Rights Watch calls for an immediate halt to forced returns, urging Malaysia to establish a transparent, rights‑based framework for managing refugee claims and to cooperate with international partners to ensure safe and voluntary resettlement options.
