The move would re‑introduce a punitive measure banned under the country’s constitution and international law, undermining the nation’s commitment to dignity and fair treatment.

The organisation calls for an immediate halt to the referendum, arguing that it would erode civil liberties and set a precedent for other authoritarian measures. It urges Taiwanese lawmakers and the public to uphold the principles of justice, accountability and respect for human life.

Amnesty International stresses that any policy reversing protections must be scrutinised for compliance with international human‑rights standards and the rule of law.
