The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights released a comprehensive report demanding Sri Lanka strengthen accountability mechanisms and reform key institutions implicated in past abuses. The document highlights persistent impunity for officials involved in extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detentions and systemic discrimination.

It urges the government to enact swift, independent investigations, protect witnesses, and ensure the judiciary’s independence. The report also calls for reparations to victims and the establishment of a national truth‑and‑reconciliation commission to address historical injustices.

Failure to act risks further erosion of civil liberties and undermines the country’s international standing. Sri Lanka’s leadership must respond decisively to uphold human rights, restore public trust, and align with global standards of justice.
