The United Nations Human Rights Office has issued a stark warning after the Indian government intensified its suppression of peaceful demonstrations, citing a rise in arbitrary arrests, use of excessive force and restrictions on free expression. The report highlights that authorities have deployed security forces in a manner that violates international norms on the right to protest and has led to numerous reports of torture and ill‑treatment in custody.

UN experts urge India to halt all coercive measures, release all detainees, and ensure independent investigations into alleged abuses. They also call for a transparent review of police training and accountability mechanisms to prevent future violations.

These findings underscore the urgent need for India to align its domestic policies with its international commitments to human rights, truth, and justice, and to restore the trust of its citizens in state institutions.
